Who determines standards of beauty and how does it affect us?
What might foot binding symbolize?
Throughout our time with Lisa in our Global Lab class, we spoke about many different topics. Out of the many topics we discussed, we mainly focused on the topic of women and the ideal concept of beauty throughout history. We spoke about the pain and suffering that women experienced in order to live up to the standards of beauty that the society holds against them, a society that has been known to be male-dominated for generations.
Examples of what we would consider Perverse/Extreme Standards of Beauty
- Foot Binding
- Corsets
- Piercings
- Scars
- African Traditional Stretching of the Skin
- Using Rings to enhance neck length
this is an example of what a corset does to a woman's internal organs.
With the Mursi in the south of Ethiopia durchstochene or cut and particularly far stretched Piercings in the lips and Ohrläppchen belong to the ideal of beauty. The larger the plate is, the more reputation applies for the woman.
